THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYEE ONBOARDING
The goal of an onboarding program is to help new employees succeed in their new job. The better the process, the more likely you’ll achieve this goal and retain your best potential employees. Employee onboarding can be delivered in several ways each offering different benefits to both the employer and employee.
WHAT IS EMPLOYEE ONBOARDING?
Onboarding is a formal process of familiarizing new employees with your organization and its culture. This can be done through an onboarding program, which varies in length and depth and type depending on the size of your organization and the objectives you want to be achieved.
Onboarding should be a systematic approach that ensures new hires feel welcome from day one. It’s critical because it helps you avoid onboarding mistakes that can lead to high turnover rates and costly mistakes down the road!
ONBOARDING IS A PROCESS
Employee onboarding is a process, not an event. There are many steps involved in the onboarding process that can be completed over time and tailored to each individual employee. The goal of any company’s onboarding program is to ensure new hires are productive from day one. This means providing them with information about their role and its specific responsibilities, as well as resources such as training materials or other documents that will help them succeed on the job quickly.
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT
Every employee who joins your organization is different, and so an effective onboarding program will vary from person to person.
For example, some people learn better when they’re shown how something works instead of simply being told about it. Others prefer to learn by doing; they need to get their hands dirty before they can understand the concept behind a task or process.
ONBOARDING TAKES TIME
Other employees might require more time than others before feeling comfortable enough with their new role at work – and still others may need more guidance along the way as they acclimate themselves into their new environment.
The point is this: every single employee that comes through your doors will have unique needs and requires different types of education in order for them to become productive members of your team as soon as possible.
ONBOARDING ENGAGEMENT
One of the most important things you can do for your organization is to ensure that new hires are productive and engaged from day one of their employment.
Engagement is a measure of how much an employee is willing to give of himself or herself to the organization, and it can have a significant impact on both retention and performance. A recent Gallup study found that high-engaged employees are:
- two times more likely than actively disengaged employees (those who hate going to work) or passive disengaged employees (those who just go through the motions) to stay with their company for 5 years or longer;
- two times more likely than actively disengaged employees (but not passive ones) or those who are not engaged at all in their jobs;
ONBOARDING IS IMPORTANT
The importance of employee onboarding can’t be stressed enough. A good onboarding program improves retention rates while improving productivity rates. It’s important to keep in mind that the best results come from a well-designed program that is tailored to each individual employee, as opposed to a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
IN CONCLUSION
To wrap up, there are many reasons why onboarding is an important part of your organization’s culture. By providing new hires with the resources, they need to succeed in their positions, you will be able to retain more employees as well as increase productivity rates among your workforce.
